Bullet scars and dreams are about the only things that Udin Mejía and his fiancée, Leyda, bring with them on their 3,000-mile journey from Honduras to the United States. Looking to escape a life defined by violence and poverty, they set upon a dangerous trek across four countries with thousands of other migrants — each of them hopeful, desperate, and determined. This documentary portrays an intimate look into the people that chose to risk everything to join a human caravan in hopes to gain asylum refuge in the United States. This is an introduction to the very people who are crossing the US border. This is their perspective, their voices, their reasons for leaving, their experiences, their joys, their fears, their dreams, their tears.
The film follows three interweaving storylines as the caravan traverses sweltering jungles, freezing mountains, and unforgiving deserts. The terrain and climate are but the smallest obstacles they encounter - Mexican gangs, kidnapping, extortion, and racist police and immigration forces all make for a journey wrought in extreme risk at every mile. When they finally reach the US Border, they are met not with the open arms America was once known for, but with rubber bullets, tear gas, and military.
“We The Migrants” is more than a news record. It is an introduction to actual people who are knocking at the doorstep of America. Let this film humanize the mothers, daughters, fathers and sons — all of the dreamers — awaiting their chance to pursue life, liberty, and safety.
